Inhale vs Exhale
It comes down to how cigars are made and how our bodies process nicotine.
Unlike cigarettes, which are designed for deep inhalation, cigars are meant to be tasted, not breathed in. Here is the breakdown of why inhaling a cigar is a quick ticket to a miserable evening:
1. The Smoke is Alkaline (and Brutal on Lungs)
Cigarette tobacco is heavily processed and flue-cured, which makes the smoke slightly acidic. Acidic smoke is easy for the lungs to draw in comfortably.
Cigar tobacco, however, goes through a long, natural fermentation process. This strips away sugars and changes the pH of the smoke, making it highly alkaline. When alkaline smoke hits your lungs, it triggers an immediate, aggressive cough reflex. Your respiratory system instantly recognizes it as an irritant.
2. A Massive Nicotine Overload
Cigar tobacco is incredibly dense and contains vastly more nicotine than a cigarette.
* A single cigarette has about 8 to 12 milligrams of nicotine (of which you actually absorb around 1 to 2 mg).
* A standard premium cigar can contain anywhere from 100 to 400 milligrams of nicotine.
Because cigar smoke is alkaline, you don’t *need* to inhale it to get the effect. The nicotine is easily absorbed right through the mucous membranes in your mouth. If you were to draw that entire volume of heavy smoke directly into your lungs, the sudden surge of nicotine into your bloodstream would likely cause instant dizziness, nausea, and a cold sweat—often called “cigar sickness.”
3. It Ruins the Flavor Profile
Cigars are blended like fine wine or scotch. The master blenders design them to interact with the taste buds on your tongue and the olfactory receptors in your nose.
* The Wrapper: Provides up to 60-90% of the flavor.
* The Filler/Binder: Controls the strength, burn rate, and complexity.
When you draw the smoke into your mouth, swirl it around, and blow it out, you catch notes of leather, coffee, spice, or cream. If you inhale it, you bypass your palate entirely, taste nothing but burnt ash, and scorch your throat.

> The Golden Rule: Treat cigar smoke like a sip of good whiskey. Appreciate the flavor on your palate, enjoy the aroma, and blow it clear. Your lungs will thank you.
