Torch The Tip
When it’s time to light up, toasting the foot (or torching the tip) is the single most important step to ensure an even burn and a perfect draw. If you blast the tobacco directly with a hot torch flame right away, you char it, which turns the initial puffs bitter and acrid.
Here is how to torch the tip like a pro:
1. Toast from a Distance
Hold your torch lighter at a 45-degree angle, keeping the visible tip of the flame about an inch or two away from the foot of the cigar. You don’t want the flame to actually touch the tobacco; you want the *intense heat* radiating from the flame to do the work.
2. Rotate to Get an Even Ring
Slowly rotate the cigar in your fingers. Watch the edge of the wrapper turn black, then gently glow red. The goal is to create a perfectly uniform charred ring around the entire rim of the foot before you ever bring the cigar to your lips.
3. Gentle Puffs to Finish
Once the outside edge is glowing, put the cigar in your mouth. Keep the torch lighter a safe distance away and take short, gentle puffs while continuing to rotate it. This pulls the heat into the filler tobacco, fully lighting the center.
4. The Blow Check
Take the cigar out of your mouth and gently blow onto the lit foot. If you see a solid, fully glowing red ember across the entire surface, you are good to go. If there are dark spots, gently touch them up with the edge of the flame heat.
Enjoy the smoke!
